ZDNET's key takeaways

  • Lockin is releasing the V7 Max smart lock this year, which is being unveiled at CES 2026.
  • The smart lock features a unique charging technology that eliminates the need for disposable and rechargeable batteries.
  • The Lockin V7 Max is expected to launch in the US, with orders shipping in mid 2026.

Though true innovation in smart devices is rare, one smart lock brand is taking to CES to debut a unique product: the Lockin V7 Max. This biometric smart lock features wireless optical charging technology, eliminating the need to replace or recharge batteries altogether.

Called AuraCharge technology, the V7 Max receives power from an optical output device plugged in within four meters' distance to wirelessly recharge its internal battery. Power is sent from within the house using an eye-safe controlled light beam that reaches the lock's receiver, which is then converted into electricity to recharge and power the smart lock.

“While third-generation power solutions like perovskite solar offer promising innovation, the technology continues to rely on adequate light to function reliably. AuraCharge requires no light, no manual charging, and provides an infinite power supply,” said Bill Chen, founder and CEO of Lockin. “We're thrilled to offer users a new level of freedom and security with a smart lock they can install once, and never worry about again.”

Imagine solar panels capturing available solar energy like a cup placed outside to collect water during a rain. In this analogy, wireless optical charging would be like filling the cup with a hose that is aimed directly at it. This makes wireless optical charging a nearly perfect solution for smaller, static, battery-powered smart home devices, such as sensors or, in this case, smart locks.

Aside from this optical charging innovation, the Lockin V7 Max supports multiple biometric security measures to unlock, including fingerprint and palm vein recognition, as well as 3D facial recognition. Supported by two HD exterior cameras with a panoramic view that make it function like a video doorbell, the smart lock features dual five-inch touchscreens for enhanced visibility.

Lockin hasn't announced a price for the V7 Max, but the Mortise smart lock is expected to be available in the US market around Q3 2026, with a price that is expected to exceed $1,000. If you're looking for a more affordable smart lock to replace your deadbolt, Lockin just announced the new Veno Pro. This smart deadbolt also uses the AuraCharge for wireless optical charging, but it's just not as feature-rich, nor is it a Mortise lock like the V7 Max.

That doesn't make it any less spectacular: The Lockin Veno Pro features palm vein recognition, passcode, remote, and fingerprint unlocking mechanisms, and doubles as a video doorbell with an out-facing camera and doorbell button. The fact that you can keep it charged with the AuraCharge by just plugging it into your home without having to pay hefty prices for installation makes the Lockin Veno Pro a contender for the best and most innovative smart deadbolt of 2026.

Lockin is planning to release the Veno Pro US this year, and it's expected to cost around $350.
